How to Choose a Custom Dining Table for a Pacific Palisades Home

In a beautifully designed home, a dining table is more than a place to sit. It helps establish the scale, warmth and character of the entire space.

That is especially true in Pacific Palisades, where architecture often celebrates natural light, open floor plans, indoor-outdoor living and expansive entertaining spaces. A standard-size dining table may technically fit the room, but the right custom table can feel as though it was designed as part of the architecture itself.

At INDIGENOUS by La Rue, we create custom dining tables for homeowners, interior designers, architects and builders throughout Southern California. Each piece begins with the space, the material and the way the client wants to live—not with a predetermined catalog size.

If you're designing or furnishing a home in Pacific Palisades, here are some of the most important things to consider when choosing a custom dining table.

1. Start With the Room, Not a Standard Table Size

One of the greatest advantages of commissioning a custom dining table is that you don't have to force a standard dimension into a nonstandard room.

Large architectural homes often have dining spaces capable of accommodating tables significantly longer or wider than conventional retail furniture.

A 96-inch table might feel substantial in one home and surprisingly small in another.

Before determining table dimensions, consider the entire room:

  • Overall length and width

  • Walkways and circulation

  • Door and patio access

  • Nearby kitchen islands or cabinetry

  • Architectural features

  • Chair dimensions

  • The number of people you regularly entertain

The goal isn't simply to fit the largest table possible. It is to create the right proportion between the table and the architecture surrounding it.

2. How Long Should a Custom Dining Table Be?

The number of people you want to seat provides a starting point, but seating capacity also depends on chair width, table-base placement and how much personal space you prefer between guests.

For larger homes, custom dining tables in the 10-, 12- and 14-foot range can create an incredible sense of scale while providing generous seating for entertaining.

We can also fabricate significantly larger pieces when the architecture calls for them.

Because INDIGENOUS by La Rue maintains an extensive inventory of premium slabs—including unusually long material—we aren't restricted to conventional furniture dimensions.

That allows us to design the table around the home rather than design the room around an available table.

3. Consider Width Just as Carefully as Length

Length tends to get most of the attention, but table width can dramatically affect how a dining table looks and functions.

A table that is too narrow may feel undersized in a large room and leave little space for serving pieces, florals or table settings.

A table that is excessively wide can make conversation across the table uncomfortable.

For many substantial custom dining tables, a width around 40 to 48 inches creates beautiful proportions, although the ideal measurement depends on the room and overall design.

This is another reason custom fabrication matters: even a few inches can significantly change the relationship between the table, chairs and surrounding architecture.

4. Choose the Wood for Character, Not Just Color

Wood species shouldn't be selected solely from a small finish sample.

Every slab has its own grain, movement, natural edges, figuring, color variation and history.

Walnut can bring depth and sophistication to a contemporary interior. Acacia can offer dramatic movement and warmth. Tamarind can produce extraordinary character at very large scales. Rare woods and highly figured slabs can turn the table into an architectural focal point.

At INDIGENOUS by La Rue, clients can select from our actual slab inventory rather than choosing their custom table from a photograph of a generic wood sample.

For designers and homeowners, this makes material selection part of the creative process.

5. Single Slab or Bookmatched?

A large dining table does not necessarily need to be made from one enormous piece of wood.

Both single-slab and bookmatched tables can be exceptional when the material is selected and fabricated correctly.

A single slab preserves the uninterrupted movement and natural character of one extraordinary piece of wood.

A bookmatched table uses complementary slabs joined to create additional width or a particular visual composition.

For some projects, bookmatching creates a more refined and symmetrical appearance. For others, the irregularity and character of a single slab is exactly what makes the piece special.

Neither is automatically superior.

The architecture, dimensions and desired aesthetic should determine the approach.

6. Live Edge, Refined Edge or Something in Between?

Not every natural wood table needs to have an extremely rustic live edge.

In contemporary and luxury interiors, we often preserve the character of the original slab while refining the overall presentation.

A subtle natural edge can bring warmth to minimalist architecture without making the room feel rustic.

A cleaner straight edge can create a more tailored, architectural appearance.

The decision should be made in relationship to the home.

This is particularly important when designing custom furniture for Pacific Palisades homes, where organic materials are often paired with highly refined architecture.

7. Should You Incorporate Resin?

Resin can be beautiful when it has a reason to be there.

It can stabilize and fill natural openings in a slab, join pieces of wood or become a deliberate part of the overall composition.

Clear resin can preserve visual openness through a natural void. Dark or tinted resin can create contrast. More complex resin treatments can transform the material into something sculptural.

But resin should complement the wood—not automatically dominate it.

Our approach is to determine what the material and architecture call for first and then decide whether resin improves the design.

8. The Base Should Be Designed With the Chairs

One of the easiest details to overlook when ordering a dining table is the relationship between the base and the seating.

A beautiful sculptural base can become frustrating if guests constantly hit it with their knees or if it prevents chairs from being positioned properly.

We consider chair placement, leg clearance, overhang and seating capacity when determining base size and location.

The visual proportions matter too.

A massive wood slab sitting on an undersized base can feel unstable. An oversized base can overwhelm the wood.

Metal, pedestal and architectural bases can all work beautifully when they're proportioned specifically for the tabletop.

9. Properly Dried Wood Matters

A custom dining table is an investment, and much of its long-term quality is determined before fabrication ever begins.

Wood naturally responds to environmental changes. If a large slab hasn't been properly dried and stabilized, it can develop excessive movement, warping or significant cracking over time.

Our slabs are air dried slowly—often for years—and then carefully kiln dried before becoming finished furniture.

This process takes considerably longer than rapidly drying material for production, but stability is particularly important when working with large-format solid wood furniture.

When comparing custom table makers, don't only ask what kind of wood they use.

Ask how the wood was dried and prepared.

10. The Finish Should Look Beautiful—and Live Beautifully

A dining table is meant to be used.

Wine glasses, dinner plates, children's homework, holiday gatherings and everyday life will eventually happen around it.

A professional finish should protect the wood while preserving the depth and tactile quality of the material.

At INDIGENOUS by La Rue, finishing is one of the most important stages of our process. We want the surface to feel as beautiful as it looks while providing the durability expected from furniture designed for everyday use.

11. Design the Table Alongside the Home

For a new build or major renovation, the ideal time to begin thinking about a custom dining table is often before the home is completely finished.

Working early allows the table dimensions, material, base and surrounding furnishings to relate directly to the architecture.

It can also simplify practical considerations such as doorway clearance and installation.

We work directly with homeowners, interior designers, architects and builders, making it possible to coordinate the table with the larger design vision rather than treating furniture as an afterthought.

For trade professionals, we also offer designer and builder pricing.
